CCPA Core Music Studies

Musicianship, Music Theory, Music History, Music Literature, and Performance Practice

The Core Studies area comprises the foundational courses required of all undergraduate music majors at CCPA. These courses include a four-semester Musicianship sequence integrating music theory, aural training, and keyboard skills; a four-semester Music History sequence covering the development of Western music from its ancient roots to the twenty-first century, as well as American vernacular music; elementary conducting; and various upper-level courses in music analysis, history, literature, and performance practice. The Core Studies area also offers seminars on rotating topics integrating music history and analysis for graduate students.

We believe strongly that these courses, and the skills and knowledge base they develop, serve as the foundation not only of each music degree program, but also of any career in the music profession: performer, teacher, conductor, composer, writer, etc. The majority of Core Studies courses are taught by full-time faculty, who work closely with the students over multiple semesters. The faculty is a dedicated group of specialists and pedagogues, whose work as scholars and musicians displays a wide range of interests and accomplishments.
