Music Education - Bachelor of Music

The goal of the Music Education Department is to provide students with the philosophical and practical foundations needed for successful careers as public school teachers, within the context of the performance-oriented conservatory approach at CCPA. The program is ideally suited for excellent performers who intend to become leading choral and instrumental directors at any level. Applicants should follow the audition requirements for classical performance.

Illinois is an excellent state in which to study music education, because of its many strong public school music programs. Note the ensembles from Illinois who perform regularly at national events in the choral, concert band, jazz, and marching events. CCPA has long-standing relationships with many schools who welcome our students for observation, practical training, and student teaching opportunities. Additionally, the music education faculty at CCPA represents more than sixty years of public school experience. Classes are designed from the standpoint of practical, time-tested methods. Finally, our conductors are committed to music education majors. You will find the ensemble experience to be quite intensive (we do not have secondary or "University" ensembles), and music education majors are expected to contribute in the same manner as performance majors (applicants are encouraged to review the performance calendar to gain a better understanding of the performance schedule and repertoire). Finally, Chicago provides one of the best cultural settings for the aspiring artist-teacher. Our building is a short walk from Symphony Center, the Art Institute, and the museum campus.

The curriculum outlined below prepares the student to teach music at both the elementary and secondary levels. Students develop: a high level of musicianship; understanding of the learner and the learning process; command of the techniques, methods, and materials of instruction; and a broad, well-rounded general education. A friendly, outgoing and well-adjusted personality, a strong desire to teach children and adolescents, a solid academic track-record, and the intellectual curiosity to explore the teaching-learning relationship are necessary requisites for anyone entering the profession of music education.

The curricula meet the certification requirements for the State of Illinois. Graduates are entitled to Roosevelt University's recommendation for the K-12 Special Certificate in Music. All curricula are fully certified by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), which entitles graduates to reciprocity privileges in certification in many other states. Graduates of the program are certified to teach all types of music classes in the elementary and secondary schools.

All music education majors register for a large ensemble during each semester except the semester of student teaching. Instrumental majors are required to participate in Wind Ensemble or Orchestra each semester; choral majors are required to participate in Chorus or Chamber Singers each semester. Additionally, students may audition for vocal and/or instrumental jazz ensembles.

All music education students enrolled for applied music instruction at or above the 202 level must present a jury each semester, with the exception of the semester in which a recital is given. The recital is required of all music education majors for graduation.

Coursework leading to the B.M. degree in Music Education

Students choose an emphasis either in choral music education (126-133 semester hours) or instrumental music education (128-135 semester hours). General education, professional education, and music core requirements are the same for both emphases. Specific requirements for each emphasis can be found below.
