Ruben Alvarez, latin percussion
The Music Conservatory Faculty

Ruben Alvarez, a Chicago-born drum set artist and Latin percussionist, is an award-winning composer and multimedia producer with more than 24 years of professional touring and recording experience. He is a leader of the Raices Latin Percussion Ensemble, and performs and records with the Chuchito Valdés Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble. He is a member of both the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, and has appeared with the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Seattle Philharmonic, and at the Chicago, North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals. Alvarez is a Resource Team member for the International Association for Jazz Education, and has presented clinics for IAJE Conferences, Teacher Training Institutes, the Artist Outreach Network and in countless additional settings. He is co-author of Rox Media's Sheddin' the BasicsTM Latin Jazz, Part One instructional CD-ROM.
