Li-Kuo Chang, viola
The Music Conservatory Faculty

Li-Kuo Chang has been assistant principal viola of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1988, appointed by Sir Georg Solti. He also served as acting principal viola of the orchestra for 1998-99 season. He has appeared as soloist with the Chicago Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Shanghai Symphony and Chicago String Ensemble. He also has been active as a chamber music player collaborating with many renowned artists, such as Daniel Barenboim, Christoph Eschenbach, Pinchas Zukerman, Henry Temianka and Gabor Rejto. His chamber music engagements also included concerts in Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Japan and Taiwan, and recordings for the German Radio.

Equally as active as a teacher, Chang has been on the faculty of Northwestern University and Roosevelt University. Many of his students have won positions in major orchestras and prizes in competitions. Chang has served on the faculty of the Affinis Music Festival in Nagano, Japan from 1992-1998. Chang studied violin and piano at the conservatory in his native city Shanghai, China. He came to the United States in 1979 as a full scholarship student at the Eastman School of Music and young artist fellow at the Music Academy of the West. He studied viola with Francis Tursi, Donald Mclnnes, Milton Thomas, Paul Doktor and William Magers.
