Roosevelt University names Henry Fogel as Dean of the Chicago College of Performing Arts

Henry Fogel, one of the best-known and most influential orchestra administrators in the United States, will become dean of Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) and distinguished professor of the arts, effective July 1, 2009.

Fogel has led some of the most prestigious and accomplished orchestral institutions in the country, including the League of American Orchestras from 2003 to 2008 and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association from 1985 to 2003.
“We are thrilled to have Henry Fogel join the Roosevelt University community and guide the Chicago College of the Performing Arts in its next phase of development,” said Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton.  “Henry is an active, thoughtful and effective leader and one of the most renowned symphony leaders in the country. He is known for his wisdom, dedication to his colleagues, operational acumen and ability to raise the bar on the achievement of everyone around him.  There could be no better or more capable individual to serve as dean at this exciting time in the history of the college.”

University Provost and Executive Vice President James Gandre, who was dean of CCPA from 2000 to 2007, said, “We were privileged to get to know Henry when the college expanded its relationship with the CSO under his leadership there and as a professor at Roosevelt University teaching orchestral studies.  Henry is not only a passionate advocate for the next generation of conductors, performers and educators, but he has a true commitment to increasing community engagement.”

“I love CCPA, where I have been teaching for five years now and where I have served on the advisory board, so I've seen its progress from the inside,” said Fogel. “It is my hope to continue this growth, and I look forward to working with the distinguished faculty and administrators to that end.”

Fogel joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association in 1985 and oversaw not only the Orchestra, but ancillary activities including the Civic Orchestra (a training orchestra), an independent presenting series of classical, jazz and world music attractions, the Chicago Symphony Chorus, and management of the Symphony Center facility.

During the period of Fogel’s leadership, the association’s endowment increased from $19 million to over $160 million and the Orchestra was in the black for 15 of his 18 years. Also during his tenure, the CSO undertook a massive program of community engagement and strengthened its educational programs considerably. In 1997, Fogel completed overseeing the award winning Symphony Center project, the $120 million renovation and expansion of Orchestra Hall.
Fogel served as executive director of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. from 1981 to 1985 and orchestra manager of the New York Philharmonic from 1978 to1981. From 1963 to 1978, he was vice president and program director of radio station WONO in Syracuse, N.Y., where he conceived the first radio fundraising marathon for an orchestra.

Fogel has been, and remains, involved with many arts organizations.  He is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, which he served as both president and chairman in the past and is a member of the Radio Committee of WFMT, the Board of Overseers of the Curtis Institute, the Executive Committee of the Avery Fisher Artist Program and the Honorary Board of the Institute for the Study of Black Music at Columbia College Chicago.  In addition, he was chairman of the board of the League of American Orchestras from 2001-2003 and served a previous 10-year term as a league trustee in the 1980s and ’90s.

He has produced many series of radio programs for Chicago Fine Arts Station WFMT that have been syndicated nationally, including, currently, “Collectors’ Corner,” which is derived from his extensive collection of over 20,000 classical recordings.  Fogel has served as a judge at conducting competitions in New York, Helsinki and Tokyo, and is as an observer for the Opera Program of the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition to an honorary doctorate from Roosevelt University, Fogel has received honorary degrees from Northwestern University, the Curtis Institute of Music and Columbia College Chicago. In 1999, Fogel received a Cultural Leadership Citation from Yale University’s School of Music for service to the cultural life of the nation. In 1997, he received the Top Chicagoan Award from Chicago Magazine. In 1990, he was named by Business Week magazine as one of the five best managers of cultural organizations in the United States.

A native of New York City, Fogel received his education at Syracuse University. He is a passionate Chinese cook, having studied for three years under Virginia Lee, author of the New York Times Chinese Cookbook.  Fogel and his wife, Frances, have a son, Karl, and a daughter, Holly, and four grandchildren.
