Composition Professor Honored
March 27, 2007
The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble (PNME) has selected composer Stacy Garrop as winner of the Harvey Gaul Composition Competition for 2006-2007. The biennial contest, held in honor of the late Pittsburgh composer and conductor, carries with it a $6,000 commission for a new work to be premiered by PNME during its 2008 season. Honorable Mentions were also awarded to Robert Patterson and Jie Wang. A panel of six judges awarded the prizes after reviewing over 120 entries from across the country. “This year marked our best year yet in terms of both the number of entrees and the extremely high quality of the works submitted. It was not an easy decision, but in the end we were unanimous that Stacy was our choice,” said PNME Executive Artistic Director Kevin Noe.
The Harvey Gaul competition was established in memory of Pittsburgh composer and conductor Harvey Gaul, who was Director of Music at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside for many years in the 1920’s and 30’s. Following Gaul’s sudden death in 1945, the “Friends of Harvey Gaul” was established to, “perpetuate the name and remembrance of the humanitarianism of Harvey Gaul, the furtherance of music and other arts, and the promotion of musical education and appreciation” In 1980, The Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble took over administration of the contest and became its sole sponsor. PNME is honored to continue recognizing the contributions of Harvey Gaul by commissioning new works by composers of the highest caliber and professionalism. Congratulations, Dr. Garrop!

CCPA Alum performs under Daniel Barenboim
December 22, 2006
Oboist and CCPA Alum Mohamed Saleh (MM '03) performed under Daniel Barenboim with the West-Eastern Divan Arab-Israeli orchestra in December. Chicago Sun Times' critic Andrew Patner wrote, "Barenboim selected Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante for winds and orchestra not only because of his lifelong love of the composer but because it allows the Divan to showcase two Israeli and two Arab soloists: clarinetist Kinan Azmeh of Syria, bassoonist Mor Biron and horn player Sharon Polyak of Israel, and oboist Mohamed Saleh Ibrahim of Egypt. All played elegantly and as a graceful collective, but the Roosevelt University alum Ibrahim's oboe solos were heavenly." Congratulations, Mohamed! Holloway Appointed to Santa Fe Opera
5.21.2005
DAVID HOLLOWAY NAMED DIRECTOR OF THE APPRENTICE PROGRAM FOR SINGERS.
David Holloway, a former apprentice singer who is chairman of the voice faculty at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University has been named Director of The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program for Singers. He succeeds Daniel Rice who is retiring after 37 years.
“I have known David for more than thirty years,” commented General Director Richard Gaddes in making the announcement. “He was an apprentice singer himself in 1966 and 1967, and has appeared with the company a number of times. In addition, he has enjoyed a distinguished international career. Now at Roosevelt University he is very much involved in the careers of young singers. I can think of no one better or more committed to run our program.”
Mr. Holloway came to Santa Fe at the suggestion of long time Santa Fe Opera conductor Robert Baustian who was on the orchestral conducting faculty at the University of Kansas where Mr. Holloway was a student. In the ensuing years he returned several times, appearing in the Magic Flute, The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein and Count Ory. Recent Santa Fe opera goers will remember his marvelous performances in two Showcase Productions, as Lockit in The Beggar’s Opera in 2001, and the following year as Deadeye Dick in H.M.S. Pinafore. Mr. Holloway made his New York debut with the New York City Opera and since then has appeared with major opera companies in this country and abroad. Since 2002 he has appeared annually with the Chicago Opera Theater.
“I have vivid memories of the summer 1967,” recalls the singer. “I was in the chorus of the new production of Salome that was performed in Sweeny Gymnasium just two nights after fire destroyed the theater. It was my experience as an apprentice in Santa Fe that let me see the larger world of opera and opened so many possibilities.
“The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program has been the model for others throughout the country. My charge will be to ascertain what the program is, and then envision what it can be. I am flattered and grateful to Richard Gaddes for his confidence in inviting me to join the Santa Fe Opera team,” he said.
Mr. Holloway lives in Chicago. He and his wife Deborah have four sons and a daughter. He will come to Santa Fe in late May for the summer season.
